This is Rabbi Harrison with a Shabbat message for our Temple Beth Hillel Beth Abraham family.
How do we find and mark the joy, the oneg, of Shabbat when we are feeling the very real emotions and possibly physical symptoms of anticipatory grief – when someone dear to us is in the process of dying? One way is to seek out community. To be with others and to share.
How appropriate we are scheduled to gather for Torah study this Saturday morning for Shabbat Shira, The Sabbath of Song. As I shared before our last Torah study gathering, studying Torah is an act that brings honor upon itself. Torah study can also bring honor to a great teacher. It can be a form of prayer and dedication. Join me this Shabbat in honor of our Rabbi Emeritus and his family – let us join together in study and in sending strength and courage their way.
May our gathering to study together also remind us of the power of chaveirut, the friendships we share that allow us to support one another through difficult events and feelings. Being together, studying together – this is how we might find a taste of oneg this Shabbat.
